DECODING THE WARDROBE OF THE MODERN INDIAN WOMAN

Posted by Lakshita on

As Rachel Zoe once said, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.”

If not everything, the modern Indian woman is most definitely a lot of things. Constantly switching between various roles, she is fierce yet compassionate, strong yet soft, fearless yet kind. Her aura is unrivalled, and history has witnessed how hard her preceding generations had to work to achieve the status that she has today. She is no longer restricted to the four walls of her house and is out there, performing admirably in every role. Even though we have made a lot of progress, there is still so much that’s left to be done.

The changes in her position in society are reflected in her wardrobe and the clothes she wears. From glitzy lehangas and shararas to LBDs and hot pants, Indian women are wearing it all. The fact that both traditional sarees and sensational gowns have made an appearance on the red carpet reflects how the Indian woman’s fashion choices are no longer restricted to ethnic wear, and yet haven’t lost touch with their roots either. In fact, a blend of traditional and contemporary is what today’s woman prefers the most. The Indian woman’s wardrobe well represents everything that she is. The question of what should I wear comes with various answers as far as Indian women are concerned.

A close look at an Indian woman’s closet, and you will see how there is a balance between western styles and traditional wear. The trends may say bodycon dresses or ruffled skirts, but long kurtis for women and kurta sets haven’t lost their charm, and they never will. Indian festivals have a huge role to play in maintaining this balance, as traditional outfits are still the first choice when it comes to festive wear for women. Even maxi dresses for women these days carry a traditional twist with Indian prints and styles. Embroidered kurtas, embroidered tunics, and multipurpose jeggings for women are a few other things that are a must-have for every Indian woman. Apart from these, floral print shirts, co-ord sets, embroidered tops for women, and embroidered dresses for women comprise a huge chunk of Indian women’s fashion choices. Tunics for women, especially velvet tunics are quite popular among them as well.

One close glance at an Indian woman’s wardrobe and you will observe that not only the fashion choices but the way of styling different traditional dresses have evolved through the years as well. Today, ripped jeans and sneakers are worn with a plain kurta, which was previously worn with a salwar and juttis. And the best part is, these experimentations look quite interesting and provide women with the comfort they seek. What is even more refreshing is the fact that the majority of Indian women are not slaves to what’s ins and what’s outs, they are setting their own trends using traditional attires.

To sum up, it can be said that it is quite refreshing to see women making their own fashion choices and carrying what makes them look and feel their utmost best. We hope that the upcoming generations carry on this legacy, and never stop flaunting their desi-ness unapologetically wherever they go.
